Overview

Safety and security is a concern for all. From terror attacks to industrial espionage and politically motivated cyber-attacks, the world is experiencing multiple security threats that are complex and hard to detect and defend. Recognising these challenges, governments and businesses agree they need highly trained professionals to deliver effective security outcomes. This undergraduate degree programme aims to meet this demand and professionalize the emerging field of public safety and security.

This four-year direct honours programme provides not only theoretical knowledge but also training in intervention strategies in the area of policing, emergency management, investigation, rehabilitation, crime reduction and terrorism. The courses are designed with a balance of theory and practice, and with emphasis on the development of management, communication and critical thinking skills.

Upon successful completion of this programme, graduates can look forward to a wide range of meaningful careers in the government, business and social service sectors.

Admission Requirements

The academic admission requirements to the full-time programme are: (a) at least three passes in H2 content subjects; or (b) a local polytechnic diploma, or an international baccalaureate diploma or a diploma from NUS High School; or (c) an equivalent of (a) or (b). Applicants with (c) have to submit either SAT or ACT scores. There will be additional admission criteria to select students who are aligned to the educational philosophy of our full-time programmes. This will be done through interviews and selection tests.

Programme Structure

The Bachelor of Public Safety and Security is a four-year direct honours programme.

Students are required to complete a total of 200 credit units (cu), inclusive of 40 cu of Common Curriculum courses. The Common Curriculum courses are first-year courses designed to hone students’ conceptual and writing abilities along with their communication skills. Students are also required to complete a 24-week work attachment, an overseas experience and a community engagement. Singapore University of Social Sciences aims to produce graduates who are professionally competent, social-minded and self-directed learners.

The 200 credit units (cu) include:

  • 40 cu of SUSS Core
  • 100 cu of Public Safety and Security Core Compulsory
  • 40 cu of Specialisation Track (includes 2 courses [10 cu] from other Specialisation Tracks)
  • 10 cu of an Integrative Course
  • 10 cu of an Applied Project
