This degree programme emanates from the key foundational components of social work theory and practice. The focus is on the mastery and integration of an eclectic knowledge base and a broad spectrum of skills. A wide range of theoretical knowledge and practice skills underlying social work practice will be covered. All these will prepare graduates in utilising a common helping process on multiple levels - with individuals, families, groups, organisations and communities and in implementing a variety of intervention roles including advocate, broker, case manager, counsellor, group educator and mediator. The programme will prepare graduates to practise in a variety of settings and with diverse populations.

Applicants with a SSI Higher Diploma in Social Service or a WSQ Diploma in Social Service will be considered for admission. Candidates may be required to undergo one or more interview(s) to assess their suitability in terms of their motivation and ability to complete the programme.

In addition to the financial aid schemes available to all students from the Singapore University of Social Sciences, there are study awards/grants which are open to Bachelor of Social Work with Minor students. They are as follows:
VWO Capability Fund (VCF) Local Training Grant The Social Work programme is supported under the VWO Capability Fund (VCF) Local Training Grant. Candidates approved for VCF funding will be given a 30% subsidy of the course fees. Applicants must be staff with National Council of Social Service (NCSS) member Voluntary Welfare Organisations (VWOs). For more details on the VCF grant, please click here.
This programme has an honours option. Students who achieve a CGPA of 3.5 and above upon completion of their basic degree will be invited to enroll in the Honours programme.
To graduate with a basic degree, students are required to complete a total of 130 credit units (cu) of courses, inclusive of 10 cu of SUSS core courses. A total of 170 cu is required to graduate with honours, inclusive of 10 cu of SUSS core courses.
Graduates are required to meet a minimum of 80% attendance, as well as meet the practicum requirements of the SASW, in order to seek professional recognition by the SASW.
This programme would appeal to those who are interested to pursue a career as a professional Social Worker in the various social services settings.
Graduates of the basic degree in Social Work can register with the Singapore Association of Social Workers (SASW) after they have met the requirements of supervised practical work. Graduates with the Honours degree will qualify for registration immediately. The Singapore Association of Social Workers (SASW) is a professional association for social workers in Singapore. It maintains a register for social workers who are members and regulates professional competency.
