BSc Logistics and Supply Chain Management

Overview

The Logistics and Supply Chain Management sector is an essential service and a key pillar of Singapore's economy. The sector faces challenges on multiple fronts. The COVID-19 pandemic has shown just how vulnerable supply chains are. Industry 4.0 and digitalisation are impacting supply chains in a big way. The boom in e-commerce and online shopping (fuelled by the pandemic) has led to the demand for innovative logistics solutions. Increasing intra-Asian trade, due to rapid urbanisation and the rise of the affluent middle class in Asia, has led to the demand for logistics services in the region.

The Bachelor of Science in Logistics and Supply Chain Management aims to develop professionals with the relevant knowledge and skill sets to meet the needs of the industry. Partnering with the Singapore Logistics Association (SLA), the curriculum is designed with a blend of theory and industry practice and aligned with the Skills Framework for Logistics to equip students with problem-solving, decision-making, digital and innovation-thinking skills to manage the flow of goods and services through the supply chain.

The programme is taught by faculty with globally recognised qualifications and extensive experience in academia and industry. Industry speakers are often invited to share their insights on related topics during class. Courses incorporate problem-solving exercises, case studies and assignments that have a strong industry focus and are oriented towards solving real-world problems.

Our students have presented and published the findings of their final-year applied projects at international conferences held in Hong Kong, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Poland, Singapore, Thailand, United Arab Emirates and Vietnam. Two papers won awards - Best Track Paper Award at 4th International Conference on Industrial Engineering and Operations Management in 2014; and Best Paper with Strong Managerial Implications at 9th Annual European Decision Sciences Institute Conference in 2018. Two papers were placed second and fifth in the Lean Six Sigma Competition and Undergraduate Student Paper Competition, respectively at the 11th International Conference on Industrial Engineering and Operations Management in 2021.

We collaborate with strategic partners in Singapore and overseas to stay in tune with the latest industry developments. One example is the annual Supply Chain Challenge series – Singapore's largest national case competition on logistics co-organised by SLA and SUSS. We have collaborated with partners in Bhutan, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Thailand to bring students for logistics overseas study trips in the region.

As most students are also working professionals, the courses in the School of Business have been developed with an emphasis on work-based examples and industry linkages whenever possible. This may allow students to apply what they have learnt in their work domains after class. Courses are taught in small class size and using seminar style approach to instill confidence in students during group and open discussions, and to encourage effective communication for the students.

Students may pursue Logistics and Supply Chain Management as a single major or in combination with a minor.
