BSc Mathematics

Overview

The Singapore University of Social Sciences mathematics programme offers graduates a rigorous and broad foundation with emphasis in applied mathematics and statistics.

The programme is taught by faculty with globally recognised qualifications and extensive teaching experience.

Mathematics as the most fundamental discipline is so pervasive that it is inherent in almost every aspect of academia and modern industry applications: statistical analysis in Actuarial Science, optimization and statistics in Artificial Intelligence and Analytics, cryptography in Cybersecurity, mathematical modelling in Engineering, quantitative analysis in finance, statistical analysis in the Humanities and Behavioural Sciences, optimization in Logistics and Supply Chain.

After completing the compulsory courses the programme allows graduates to explore in greater depth via a range of elective courses that includes diverse topics such as coding theory, cryptography, experimental design, financial mathematics, graph theory, regression analysis, differential equations, stochastic processes.

As all foundational mathematics is re-examined and reviewed within the compulsory core level 1 mathematics courses, anyone who meets the general university entry requirement with an interest in learning mathematics can join the programme. In particular, an A-level pass in mathematics is NOT required for joining the programme.

Students may pursue Mathematics as a single major or in combination with a minor.

Admission Requirements

Refer to general admission criteria for undergraduate programme.

Interviews will be conducted for all shortlisted applicants to assess their suitability and ability to complete the programme.

Financial Assistance

There are also various types of financial aid available to students who need financial assistance. Please click here for more details.

Programme Structure

BSc Mathematics

To graduate with a basic degree, students are required to complete 130 credit units (cu), which include:

BSc (Hons) Mathematics

This programme has an honours option. Students who achieve a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 3.5 and above upon completion of their basic degree may be invited to enrol in the honours programme. Graduating students who meet the eligibility criteria for an Honours classification will be awarded an honours degree based on aggregate academic performance measured by the CGPA assessed throughout the degree programme.

To graduate with an honours degree, students are to complete an additional 40 cu to achieve a total of 170 cu, which include:

The curriculum is structured such that:

  • Level 1 courses consist of a basic suite of four courses which covers all aspects of foundational mathematics and basic calculus.
  • Level 2 courses consist of a set of core courses in linear algebra and real analysis, multivariable calculus, advanced calculus, probability, statistical inference that will prepare students for more advanced mathematics courses, together with a number of elective courses in financial mathematics, Python programming, data structures and algorithms, differential equations.
  • Level 3 courses consist of a collection of advanced elective courses such as coding theory, cryptography, complex analysis, experimental design, graph theory, optimization, regression analysis, stochastic processes where students can choose courses to suit their own interests and abilities.

The mathematics degree programme focuses on mathematical content which develops a rich and fascinating skill set that is widely applicable.

The Mathematics programme seeks to impart graduates with strong analytical and problem solving skills that can be applied in many diverse areas such as actuarial science, analytics, artificial intelligence, computing, finance, logistics, management and meteorology.

A Singapore University of Social Sciences mathematics degree is the ideal first degree. It prepares you with strong quantitative/analytic and problem solving skills which are highly sought after in many diverse fields including actuarial science, data science, education, finance, IT, logistics, management, meteorology and research.

Approximately one-third of our graduates land up in the IT-industry such as Programmers, AI Engineer, Cybersecurity Analyst and etc. Roughly another one-third of our graduates land up in the Education sector as MOE teacher or private tuition teacher. The rest of the graduates are mostly working in the Finance sector as Actuary, Banker or in the Logistics sector as Optimization Consultant or Statistician in the public or private sector.
