Law Programme Admission Requirements


Admission Criteria

The Law programme is open to Singaporeans and Permanent Residents only. This programme is unable to enrol international students or non-citizens. In addition, you will need to meet these minimum requirements:

Bachelor of Laws (LLB)

  • Applicants to the LLB programme must have at least a GCE 'A' level with three passes (prior to 2006) or three H2 passes (from 2006), or a local Polytechnic Diploma or an International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma or a NUS High School Diploma;
  • Demonstrate aptitude to practise law through taking the UK Law National Aptitude Test (LNAT)1;
  • All applicants (other than fresh school leavers with 'A' Levels or diploma certificates) will be required to provide a full CV detailing their work experience as well.

Juris Doctor (JD)

  • Applicants to the JD programme must have at least a Bachelor's degree AND substantial work experience;
  • Demonstrate aptitude to practise law through taking the UK Law National Aptitude Test (LNAT)1;
  • All applicants will be required to provide a full CV detailing their work experience as well.

Additionally, applicants must also meet the English Language proficiency requirement and meet one of the following MTL requirements if you have the following education background:

Singapore-Cambridge GCE 'A' Levels / NUS High School DiplomaInternational Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma
  • minimum of D7 for the higher MTL paper taken at the GCE 'O' Level examination
  • minimum of 'S' grade for the H1 MTL paper or General Studies in Chinese taken at the GCE 'A' Level examination.
  • minimum of 'S' grade for the H2 MTL and Literature taken at the GCE 'A' Level examination
  • pass in the MTL 'B' Syllabus paper at the GCE 'A' Level examination

 

  • pass in SL/HL MTL A: Literature, MTL A: Language and Literature, or Language B paper taken at IBDP Examination
  • IB SL Language ab initio or IGCSE MTL First Language examination does not meet MTL requirement. 

 

You should fulfil the requirement with your assigned MTL (i.e Chinese, Malay or Tamil) or MTL-in-lieu (i.e Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Punjabi, Urdu, French, German, Japanese or Arabic). Students assigned Burmese or Thai as their MTL-in-lieu and who have studied in a Junior College or Millenia Institute should have applied for MTL exemption at the post-secondary level, and would have received an approval letter from MOE. Approval from MOE is required for any change of language offered or exemption from the MTL requirement.

For those who have obtained MOE's approval to be exempted from an MTL or MTL-in-lieu, please submit your approval letter to the Admissions office no later than 30 June in the year of admission.

Applicants who have not satisfied the MTL requirement above may be admitted on a provisional basis and will be required to attain the MTL within the period of their university study before being permitted to graduate from SUSS.

All eligible students will be assessed through admission interviews, a review of their personal statements on aspirations and motivations and any supporting evidence of their commitment to the practice of criminal and family law.

All applications are considered individually on merit, and the offer of admission is dependent on the number of places available in individual programmes. Admission is solely at the discretion of SUSS and the decision is final and binding. SUSS reserves the right to refuse admission and is not obliged to offer an explanation for the non-admission of unsuccessful candidates.

1 LNAT is a registered trademark of LNAT Consortium Limited. Details of the test, including training for it is available at http://www.lnat.ac.uk. The actual test is administered through Pearson VUE,> and is available at the Singapore test-centres. All applicants are required to complete the LNAT test as stipulated in LNAT website. All applicants applying for Law programme must submit LNAT score that is obtained in the last one year for consideration.
