English-Chinese Translation of Literary Works (CTI304)

Synopsis

This course explores the theories and techniques of translating major English literary genres including poetry, drama, fiction and prose. Background knowledge including the specific features and the classification of English literary works will be introduced while the appropriate translation techniques for each type of literary texts and the corresponding features will be analyzed. Special attention will be paid to the differences between English and Chinese literary conventions and cultures. Selected translated English literary works will be analysed to illustrate the problems and their solutions. Students are given opportunities to translate literary works from English to Chinese including literary essay, poems, short stories, and dramas.
