Sangam Classical Poetry of Love (Agham)

Sangam Classical Poetry of Love (Agham) (TLL307)

Synopsis

The golden age of Agham literature or Sangam Literature precedes all other golden ages in the Tamil history. Sangam poems fall under two broad categories: puram (the heroic) and agham (the erotic). Agham poems are mode of numerous verses composed by different poets at various times and places. Agham concentrates on love sentiments and events related to it. They stand as the finest examples of classical poetry, both in theme and manner of expression. In this course, students will learn about Tamil social history: the customs, food, dress, and ornaments of the Tamils; and the five geographical areas (Kurinji, Marutham, Palai, Mullai and Neidal) by which ancient Indian land was divided, and the influence of their related traditions.
