Graduate Certificate in Experience Design

Graduate Certificate
(Postgraduate)

To enable graduates to design meaningful and delightful experiences that address complex business problems and wicked social challenges in the VUCA world.

Graduate Certificate in Experience Design

Overview

Experience design is a discipline and practice that puts people at the heart of design decisions when shaping and creating solutions that deliver value. Using design principles, methods, tools, and practices as the enablers and prior disciplinary knowledge from business, technology, and social sciences to name a few, students get to tackle complex business and wicked social challenges in the VUCA world and build a career in ‘experience design’ focusing on design offerings such as information products, digital products, services, events, and processes that are useful, usable, and desirable.

This Graduate Certificate in Experience Design (GCXD) caters to the emerging industrial need for experience makers. Working professionals who wish to acquire and deepen their theoretical understanding and practical capabilities in the contemporary practices of experience design would benefit from this programme.

Note: GCXD only covers core courses and one (1) elective course. Applicants may wish to consider the Graduate Diploma in Experience Design (GDXD) programme for a more complete offering of experience design courses and the applied project.

Admission Requirements

Refer to general admission criteria for graduate programmes.

This programme is currently unable to take in international students, i.e., you must be a Singapore citizen, permanent resident or a resident in Singapore (e.g., Employment Pass holder) in order to apply for admission.

Financial Assistance

The University offers course fee concession for selected graduate programmes. Please click here for more details.

Programme Structure

GCXD is a 15-credit units (cu) programme comprising three (3) core courses and one (1) elective course. The first two core courses in the GCXD programme are 2.5 credit units (cu), while the third core course and the additional elective course are both 5 cu. All courses can be taken on a stand-alone basis. Upon successful completion of 15 cu of coursework, these courses can be stacked to a Graduate Certificate in Experience Design (GCXD).

Students have to maintain a minimum CGPA of 2.5 in their coursework as part of the fulfilment of the graduate certificate programme.

Compulsory Courses (15 cu)

3Core Courses (10 cu)

1 Elective Course (5 cu)

All graduates and professionals with a basic degree aspiring to be experience makers or applicants with the following backgrounds would benefit most from this programme:

Design Design-Related Non-Design Disciplines
Communication Design
Information Design
Interaction Design
Product Design
User Experience Design
Digital/ Interactive Media
Engineering Design
Human-Computer Interaction

Applicants from the non-design disciplines — when admitted to the programme — may be required to complete preparatory work on their own and attend the supplementary workshop(s) before the commencement of the programme.

Depending on the chosen elective and the portfolio, graduates can take on the following entry level —but not limited to—experience making positions:

Experience designer, service designer, user experience designer, and user experience researcher.

  1. How many intake(s) are there in a year for the Grad Cert in Experience Design (GCXD)?
There are two intakes per year that take place in January and July.
  1. Do I need design background to enter the Grad Cert in Experience Design (GCXD)?
Applicants with basic design skills and visual sensitivity — e.g., comfortable and capable of producing a decent presentation slide deck from scratch without using the templates, including using appropriate typefaces, colours, layout, and imagery — would help.

Applicants without design skills and visual sensitivity can start with the following two core courses that build the foundations of design, i.e., thinking, making and doing:
    • DES531 Graduate Design Seminar (2.5 cu) — This course builds design vocabulary and introduces a grounded perspective on Design as a discipline and profession in contemporary practice. Through readings, light research work and reflections, students will develop their understanding of design with confidence.
    • DES533 Communication Design (2.5 cu) — This course focuses on (a) the development of basic design concepts and practical visual skills and (b) application of design principles in mapping, documenting and communicating the process and outcome of a given design project.

    • In addition, applicants may be required to take additional preparation before the commencement of selected courses.
  1. How long does it take to complete the Grad Cert in Experience Design (GCXD)?
The part-time GCXD programme duration is one (1) year, and the maximum candidature period is two (2) years.

  2. Can I apply for course exemption?
No, currently we do not offer course exemption for courses in GCXD.

  3. Are there any attendance requirements?
Most design courses are studio-based, i.e., students are expected to work collaboratively either in a physical classroom and/ or digital workspace under the guidance of an instructor and occasionally the invited guest. You are strongly encouraged to attend all sessions or make alternate arrangement with your groupmates if you are unable to attend specific session.

  4. Are there any other requirements?
There may be additional annual or monthly software subscription fees involved in the GCXD programme or selected courses.

  5. Instead of signing up for a Graduate Certificate programme, can I just register for one course?
Applicants may continue to sign up for modular courses as CET by submitting an application via the CET application portal. Upon successful completion of and attainment of the minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50 for the required modular courses, eligible CET students may apply for the graduate certificate.

  6. What happens if I do not complete the graduate programmes (e.g. Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, Master) within the candidature period? Can I apply to take the remaining courses via CET pathway?
Students who have not completed their graduate programmes within the stipulated candidature period will not be eligible for the award of the qualification for such graduate programmes. Such students however may apply to take, via the CET pathway, the remaining courses which they did not complete under their graduate programmes as part of their personal learning and development . Such application will be subjected to the CET admission requirement. However, as such students have exceeded the candidature period for their graduate programmes, they will not be awarded the qualification for such graduate programmes even after taking and completing the remaining courses via the CET pathway (“Condition”).

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS COURSE, IS ONE OF THE COURSES UNDER A GRADUATE PROGRAMME. THEREFORE, APPLICANTS FOR THIS COURSE ARE SUBJECT TO THE FOREGOING CONDITION. BY SUBMITTING AN APPLICATION FOR THIS COURSE, THE APPLICANT AGREES TO BE SUBJECT TO THE FOREGOING CONDITION.
