SD104: Essentials of Academic Integrity


This mandatory online course introduces students to the importance of upholding academic integrity in their studies. It explains what constitutes plagiarism and other forms of academic dishonesty, and provides practical guidance on how to avoid them.

Students will learn how to properly acknowledge the ideas and findings of others in their academic work, including an introduction to common referencing and citation styles. The module also covers how to identify different types of sources and apply appropriate citation methods.

Through practical tips and interactive exercises, students will develop the skills needed to maintain integrity and produce responsible academic work.

Note: Students from schools or programmes that do not use APA, MLA, Chicago/ Turabian, or Harvard styles should check with their instructors regarding the guidelines to follow.

 

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you should be able to

  • Explain the importance of academic integrity
  • Define and identify instances of plagiarism, cheating, collusion, and fabrication
  • Describe the scope of plagiarism and the penalties for committing plagiarism at SUSS
  • Paraphrase, summarise, cite, and reference appropriately to avoid committing plagiarism
  • Effectively interpret Turnitin reports to avoid committing plagiarism

1. Where do I access SD104? 

Newly matriculated PTUG, FTUG, and SLAW students will be automatically enrolled into the SD104 course on Canvas. Access will be made available on the course start date, and you will receive an email notification from TLC informing you of the commencement date. Details of the course can also be found in either the AOO or matriculation booklet. 

 

2. How long will SD104 be available to me? 

The course will be available on Canvas for three months from the start date. Please ensure that you complete the course within this period, as no extensions will be granted. 

 

3. What is considered successful completion of SD104? 

To be considered as having successfully completed the SD104 course, you must:

(a) Complete all practice quizzes and the final quiz in Canvas by the stipulated deadline; and
(b) Achieve a minimum score of 80% on the final quiz.
