Synopsis
The meteoric rise of Generative AI (GenAI) tools, like ChatGPT, has led many experts to predict significant disruptions in the educational landscape. But how exactly is AI disrupting education? In this workshop, we will explore the functions, affordances, and limitations of GenAI in educational settings. Participants will gain insights on how poor GenAI use habits can hinder critical thinking processes, and together, we will learn strategies to promote rigorous and responsible use of such tools amongst educators and learners. Through this workshop, participants will learn effective strategies to cultivate evaluative judgement and higher-order critical thinking skills, and learn how to use GenAI effectively to enhance our cognitive processes. Participants will also be equipped with a comprehensive plan on how to integrate GenAI into their instructional practices to develop innovative teaching and learning practices to further enhance learning outcomes.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the workshop, participants should be able to:- explain the functions, affordances and limitations of GenAI, with a specific focus on ChatGPT, and describe their potential applications in educational settings
- understand how poor use of GenAI tools can disrupt thinking in anyone – and how educators can teach and cultivate better use habits to empower themselves and learners to overcome these challenges
- develop appropriate prompts to achieve the intended learning outcomes; and how to cultivate a collaborative workflow with AI to augment our thinking abilities.
- create innovative and original methods for using GenAI tools to improve teaching and learning experiences
- formulate a detailed plan for incorporating GenAI into teaching and learning practices, and reflect on the effectiveness of the plan for student learning outcomes
