“If you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” That quote reminds me why it’s important to meet people where they are and help them realise their worth."
I chose to pursue the Master of Gerontology at SUSS because it aligned closely with my work – running a social enterprise that focuses on tech and mental wellness education for older adults. SUSS’s reputation in the field made it a natural fit. I wanted to deepen my understanding so I could better support the communities I serve.
Studying part-time while managing full-time work in workforce development and running a business wasn’t easy. Assignments were often done late at night after long days. But the learning journey was rich. It stretched me, not just professionally, but personally.
What stood out most was the community. The Gerontology cohort - students, alumni, and faculty - formed a close-knit network that I keep in touch with. Overseas study trips were a highlight, giving me a broader view of eldercare systems across cultures. I also had the privilege of presenting my research at the Ageing Asia Conference and an international gerontechnology forum, which was incredibly affirming.
SUSS has helped shape how I view the world. The “Head, Heart, Habit” philosophy reminded me that it’s not just about technical skill, but also having the heart to serve and the habit of lifelong learning. I’ve grown from being a purely technical thinker to someone who sees the social impact behind every solution.
Joining the Alumni Advisory Committee felt like a natural way to give back. I received bursaries and scholarships growing up, which supported me through school when things were tough. Being able to now contribute, even in small ways, feels deeply meaningful.
I hope to continue championing tech education for older adults, whether in the community or in the workforce. Everyone deserves the chance to thrive, especially in a digital world.
