Calvin M.L. Chan is an Associate Professor. His research concerns the social and organisational aspects of information systems, with particular interest on the digitalisation of the private sector (e.g. digital disruption of SME), public sector (e.g. e-government and smart cities) and people sector (smart communities and Information and Communications Technology [ICT] & Ageing). His research has been published in leading journals and conferences in the Information Systems discipline. He also serves on a number of government committees related to ICT & Ageing. He received his PhD from the National University of Singapore and BSc(Hon) from the University of Warwick.
The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the rate of digitalisation. With many shops being shut when the circuit breaker was initially imposed, many turned to shopping and ordering food online, seeking out entertainment online, and even socialising with friends and family online. Concern was quickly directed towards the less tech-savvy senior citizens as they would have missed out on the above and be more affected by the circuit breaker. Initiatives were quickly put in place to help senior citizens "go digital". Drawing upon his research in Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and Ageing, Associate Professor Calvin Chan will share his thoughts on the boons and banes of digital technologies usage to the well-being of senior citizens. To give a sneak peek to his talk, it is not a simple all good or all bad (like most things in life), but more like "it depends". Come for the talk to find out what the dependencies may be.
