From Science Student to Social Changemaker: Maria's Journey of Impact

Maria received the SUSS RAISE (Distinction) Award shows the power of stepping outside your comfort zone. After
graduating from polytechnic, a gap year internship at the People's Association (PA) opened her eyes to the
realities of underserved communities. Witnessing firsthand the struggles of families living in rental flats
sparked a passion for social change.
Inspired by her internship experience, Maria founded Project Khas Untukmu ("Project Specially for You"). This
initiative partners with boutiques to provide brand-new Hari Raya clothes to low-income families. Since its
inception, the project has benefitted over 140 families and distributed 520 sets of festive wear. Maria's
project highlights the importance of social responsibility and ensuring everyone feels the joy of celebrating
holidays.

“Every moment in life is an endeavour, a chance to strive, grow and transform.”
The RAISE Award ceremony resonated deeply with Maria as Deputy Provost Allan Chia’s speech emphasised that
success extends beyond academic achievements. This aligns with Maria's philosophy of being a well-rounded
individual who contributes to society. Receiving the award was a validation of her efforts and a testament to
SUSS's commitment to recognising social impact.
The ceremony was a source of inspiration for Maria. Meeting other student award recipients showcased the diverse
ways students can contribute to society, be it through social impact, internships, or sports. The event fostered
a sense of community and encouraged students to go beyond their studies. Being seated at a VIP table and
interacting with school executives further solidified the feeling of being valued and appreciated.
Maria believes success lies in being a well-rounded student who prioritises academics while actively pursuing
other passions. Extracurricular activities and external involvement not only provide valuable skills and
experiences but also serve as stress relievers. She emphasises the importance of finding a healthy balance
between studies, personal well-being, and extracurricular activities.
Maria concludes her story with a powerful message about perseverance. She encourages fellow students to view
mistakes as learning opportunities and not be discouraged by setbacks. Having a growth mindset and the belief in
one's ability to contribute are key to achieving success.
