From Daunting Beginnings to Meaningful Impact: Melissa's Project MindsCraft Journey

Melissa's journey as co-head of Project MindsCraft, an initiative aimed at fostering inclusion for individuals with intellectual disabilities (PWIDs), has been a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of meaningful impact.

Initially, the prospect of designing and implementing engaging and appropriate activities for PWIDs seemed daunting. "We had to carefully consider their diverse needs and abilities and ensure that our activities could truly value-add to their lives,” Melissa recalls.

"Shift your mindset from feeling ‘forced’ to feeling EMPOWERED to take on this challenge. "

One of the biggest challenges was the unfamiliarity of working with such a diverse group of clients. "I also realised that many of my team members were new to this and required guidance on how to effectively interact with and plan for PWIDs," she reflects. Educating and supporting her team while navigating this new territory was no easy task, but it helped her grow as a leader and collaborator.

Despite the initial challenges, the project flourished. "Seeing the joy and pride on the clients’ faces as they posed with their finished products after each session was incredibly rewarding," Melissa shares. Witnessing client’s eager and thoughtful responses during the sustainability-themed sessions reaffirmed Project MindsCraft’s purpose and the importance of every step toward greater inclusion.

Receiving recognition for her work, Melissa emphasises that this award reflects the collective effort of her team and the trust placed in them by their partnering organisation. "Despite our lack of experience, they believed in us," she says. This award is also a platform to spotlight the importance of disability inclusion and advocacy within the SUSS community.

Melissa believes that true success lies beyond grades and accolades. "For me, success is about staying true to your values and ensuring that they guide how you live your life," she explains. Every choice, action, and interaction should reflect what matters most to you.

Her advice to fellow students is to start with self-reflection. Ask yourself: “What do I stand for? What are my values, morals, and ethics?” Once you have clarity on who you are, you'll find it easier to determine what success means to you. It's not about living someone else's definition of success; it's about creating your own. Pursue what is meaningful to you, and let that be your guide.

Melissa's journey with Project MindsCraft exemplifies the transformative power of inclusive initiatives and the importance of pursuing projects that align with one's values.
