Honorary Senior Fellow
With a Social Work career spanning over four decades, Ms. Ang Bee Lian is currently the Commissioner for the Maintenance of Parents and the former Senior Adviser and Director-General of Social Welfare at the Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF). She was the recipient of the Outstanding Social Worker Award (OSWA) in 1999 and was awarded the Public Administration Medal (Silver) in 2002, and the Public Administration Medal (Gold) in 2018, one of Singapore's highest national honours for public service. In 2026, she was further honoured with the Distinguished Arts and Social Sciences Alumni Award by the NUS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, recognising her decades of shaping Singapore's social service landscape.
Ms. Ang contributions shaped how Singapore cares for its most vulnerable. She helped build a social service system grounded in dignity and partnership, shifting from charity to empowerment.
As Chair of the Social Work Programme Advisory Committee and Honorary Senior Fellow at the SUSS School of Social Work and Social Development, Ms. Ang demonstrates her lifelong commitment to nurturing the next generation of social work professionals.
Ms. Ang's legacy reminds us that meaningful change requires both compassion and courage, and that every social worker can write the next chapter of Singapore's social story.
