Finding Purpose: Roger's Journey of Service and Self-Discovery.

Roger's journey towards meaningful service began with a desire to contribute to society. "I wanted to help people in a meaningful way, and I realised that pursuing a degree in Psychology at SUSS was the first step," he recalls.

His initial plan to volunteer as a paracounselor at Changi Prison was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, this unexpected setback led to a new and impactful initiative. ”Why not start writing to the inmates instead?" he questions. And so began his journey of connecting with individuals facing unique challenges.

"Initially, I struggled to find meaningful content for my letters," he admits. "But then I realised I could approach it like writing a blog, making it more engaging and relatable." Despite facing challenges like finding the time to write consistently, Roger persevered.

"I started waking up early every morning to write to the inmates," he shares. "The insights I gained from their experiences profoundly impacted me, fostering a deeper understanding of human resilience and compassion."

Receiving the RAISE Award in recognition of his efforts was unexpected but deeply meaningful. "This award signifies that my work is not just about personal fulfillment," he reflects. "It highlights the importance of reaching out to others and making a positive impact on their lives."

"The most rewarding part of this experience has been witnessing the positive impact of these simple acts of kindness."

Roger believes that true success lies in finding purpose and aligning your actions with your values. "Understanding yourself, your strengths, and your goals is crucial," he explains. "Success isn't always about achieving the highest grades or reaching a specific destination. It's about making a difference, however small, and living a life that is meaningful to you."
