Jonathan has an MA in Directing Fiction from the National Film & Television School in the UK. An award-winning writer and director, his shorts have screened at International Film Festivals.

Additionally, Jonathan has experience in the music video medium, known for his long-lasting collaboration with local singer Charlie Lim.

Jonathan’s debut feature film Pace, starring Desmond Tan and Joel Choo, is set for release in 2026.

Kang Sheng holds an MFA in Film Directing from UCLA. He is the co-founder of Waking Life Pictures and a producer of The Old Man and His Car (dir. Michael Kam, 2025). As a filmmaker, he has directed award-winning short films and a television series for Mediacorp. His research interests include Singapore film history and audiovisual preservation, and he collects and digitizes films by independent Singapore filmmakers for research and documentation.

Don has directed many episodes for Mediacorp, HBO Asia, and Viddsee, among others, and has made documentaries, short-form series, and web dramas.

He has also made commercials and branded content for clients such as Ministry of Health, Ministry of Digital Development & Information, UOB, and Income.

Don has written and directed more than ten short films. In 2025, Don directed the short film “One Last Song” for the SG60 anthology film Kopitiam Days.  

Alvin is a graduate of the prestigious Beijing Film Academy’s Film Directing programme. His award-winning work has screened at over 50 major film festivals.

Alvin has worked on campaigns for the Ministry of Culture, Community & Youth, Ministry of Education, McDonald’s, and more.

In 2025, Alvin was conferred the Young Artist Award by Singapore’s National Arts Council, the nation’s highest accolade for young artists. Alvin is currently working on his debut feature film.

Film Studies regularly invites filmmakers to join us so we can learn from them. Here’s the Singapore Film class with First Assistant Director Tiffany Ng, who has worked on films like Crazy Rich Asians and Pace, HBO’s award-winning comedy Hacks, as well as music videos for Coldplay and Xin Liu.

Actress Tan Kheng Hua joined Film Studies students for a great session, too. Other filmmakers who’ve dropped by class include directors Boo Junfeng, Yeo Siew Hua, Derrick Lui, Remi M Sali, and Sun Koh; producers Dan Koh, Juan Foo, and Huang Junxiang.

During my internship with SFS, I got to organize film festivals in partnership with diplomatic missions such as the Embassy of South Korea, Japanese Cultural Centre (under the Japanese Embassy), and Hong Kong Economic & Trade Office. I attended meetings with industry partners and cultural attachés to represent SFS's interests. I also oversaw key segments spanning marketing, operations, and public relations. Interning with the SFS was a fantastic experience.

I've been working with and mentoring local and foreign interns for decades. Hands down, SUSS Film Studies students are unmatched in their domain knowledge, multi-dimensionality, and relative maturity in thought and conduct. We always look forward to receiving their applications!

Choosing to minor in Film Studies was the best decision I made throughout my SUSS years. I’ve learnt so much from all the experienced lecturers.

I’ve always been the kind of student that thrives with passionate teachers, and the FLM instructors were so engaging, energetic and thoughtful during our night classes. I loved every class and even the assignments we had. 

Film Studies gave me a new lens through which to see cultural, economic, political and social issues; kind of like studying life and history through this medium of art. While I might not do film full-time or professionally, Film Studies has taught me to be more aware and critical when I consume media—which is so important nowadays!

Film Studies gave me a stronger vocabulary and framework for talking about film, and more broadly about culture. It equipped me with the tools to think critically about form and aesthetics, creative intent and execution, and the social implications of what we see on screen. More than that, I think Film Studies has simply made engaging with art richer, more thoughtful, and more meaningful.

Film Studies transformed the way I think about storytelling. For the first time, I genuinely looked forward to every class because I knew I’d leave each one a better storyteller. The hands-on experience of writing, directing, shooting, and editing films, together with the support of passionate lecturers and like-minded peers, gave me the confidence and foundation that continue to shape my work today as a Content Producer, Animator, and Filmmaker.
