Mathematics underpins many technologies, decisions and systems used in modern society.

Statistical analysis drives research and analytics; optimisation improves business and logistics operations; cryptography secures digital information; and mathematical modelling helps organisations understand complex real-world problems.

The Minor in Mathematics provides breadth for students to strengthen the quantitative dimension of their major, while the Second Major in Mathematics offers interdisciplinary training to support careers in fields such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, data science, engineering, finance and logistics.

Use calculus, linear algebra, probability and statistics to formulate and solve quantitative problems. Students learn techniques such as differentiation, integration, matrix operations, systems of equations and statistical inference.

Construct coherent mathematical arguments, work with abstract concepts and assess whether conclusions follow from stated assumptions. Linear algebra, real analysis and advanced calculus strengthen precision and disciplined reasoning.

Describe and visualise data, estimate population parameters, conduct hypothesis tests, build regression models and interpret statistical findings. Students also gain experience using software for practical data analysis, such as in MTH212 Statistical Analysis.

Translate real-world situations into equations, functions, matrices, networks or optimisation models. This enables students to investigate possible outcomes, evaluate constraints and compare alternative solutions.

Depending on their electives, students may learn to formulate and solve linear or integer optimisation problems. These techniques are valuable in areas such as scheduling, logistics, resource allocation, portfolio planning and operational decision-making, such as in MTH355 Basic Mathematical Optimisation, MTH356 Advanced Mathematical Optimisation, and MTH367 Network Optimisation and Modelling.

Apply mathematical approaches to problems in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, finance, engineering, analytics, logistics and research. Students who are pursuing the second major can explore areas such as programming, cryptography, regression analysis, financial mathematics, stochastic processes and network optimisation.
