Relevance of Course to employment/upskilling/reskilling
Focusing on professional translation from Chinese into English, the course develops high-order competencies such as critical reading, contextual analysis, and decision-making. By analysing authentic source texts, identifying implicit message and recognising potential missteps that may lead to cultural misunderstanding or conflict, learners strengthen their linguistic precision, cross-cultural sensitivity, judgement and quality-assurance capabilities through conveying adequately in culturally specific ways. These transferable and high-order skills support employability across sectors such as communications, public service, education, media, and international business, while enabling reskilling and upskilling for roles that require bilingual expertise, human oversight of AI outputs, and cultural mediation.

Trainer Information
Mr Yuen Kum Cheong completed his Master’s degree in Translation and Interpretation at Nanyang Technological University, including the Advanced Translator / Interpreter Training Programme at Beijing Foreign Studies University. Trained as a landscape architect at University of New South Wales (Australia) and completed his Executive MBA at National University of Singapore, he spent close to 20 years in public service. He is currently a translation and interpretation practitioner, providing professional language services to public and private sector clients in the English-Chinese language pair. He is also an adjunct lecturer in translation at Singapore University of Social Sciences, Nanyang Technological University and National University of Singapore.
