Synopsis
GSS506 National Security, Intelligence and Terrorism Studies will equip the student with an understanding of intelligence practice in the national security context, focusing on Asia Pacific region. This course covers foundational principles such as critical thinking and operational intelligence theory and practice, structured around national security. The aim is to provide students with a robust understanding of terrorism, violent extremism and transnational crime. Students will gain advanced capabilities in strategic intelligence analysis and analytical techniques specific to national security. This involves exploring how intelligence agencies collect, analyse, and utilise information to make informed decisions regarding national security threats. Next, students will develop a thorough understanding of the national security landscape, including the roles of various agencies. The course will delve into contemporary legislation and key professional debates, such as the politicisation of intelligence, intelligence failures, and ethical issues. Finally, students will examine the connections between intelligence doctrinal issues and their application in a complex global and transnational security environment. This includes analysing how intelligence agencies adapt to emerging threats and collaborate with each other to address transnational challenges.
