Course Code: GSS510

Synopsis

GSS510 Crisis Management and Recovery provides an in-depth examination of risk governance, with a powerful emphasis on building organisational resilience and managing crises effectively. Students will learn to think critically and practically about identifying risks, mitigating threats, preparing for disruptions, responding to crises, and ensuring swift recovery from multiple perspectives. The course begins by unpacking the key legal, economic, informational, and organisational tools of risk governance that underpin resilience. Students will gain a deep understanding of how these instruments are used to shape behaviour, influence outcomes, and bolster organisational capacity to withstand and adapt to challenges in an uncertain world. A central theme will be the shift from traditional command-and-control approaches to more nuanced concepts of smart regulation, good governance, and proactive risk management that foster a culture of resilience. Students will explore how principles like cost-benefit analysis, behavioural design, and collaborative industry regulation can be leveraged to identify vulnerabilities, implement controls, and develop robust contingency plans. Throughout the course, students will analyse real-life cases of organisational crises, focusing on what contributed to the crisis, how resilience factors aided or hindered response and recovery, and what lessons can be applied to strengthen risk management. They will consider how theoretical concepts translate to practical strategies for mitigating risks, managing disruptions, and ensuring continuity of critical operations. At the end of the course, students will be able to design and implement comprehensive risk management frameworks and resilience strategies that minimise vulnerabilities, protect assets, and ensure organisational capacity to absorb and recover from crises swiftly and effectively.
