Synopsis

PSY108 Introduction to Psychology 2 introduces the basic principles, concepts and theories of Developmental Psychology, Learning, Personality, Social Psychology, Abnormal Psychology and Health Psychology. The human life-span will be explored with reference to theories of physical, perceptual, cognitive, intellectual, language, moral, social, and emotional development and how they might be influenced by nature versus nurture. The learning journey will include pre-recorded lectures, interactive and instructive online resources that supplement the textbook and study guide, multimedia tutorials, videos, simulations, animations, tests and quizzes that will enhance one’s knowledge and mastery of the key concepts covered in this course.

Relevance of Course to employment/upskilling/reskilling

This introductory psychology course supports employability, upskilling, and reskilling by developing foundational knowledge of human behaviour, evidence-based analytical skills, and research literacy. Through understanding psychological theories and key topic areas such as human development, motivation and emotion, learning principles, social behaviour, personality, and psychological well-being, learners gain transferable competencies in critical thinking, professional communication, and ethical decision-making that are essential across contemporary workplaces. The course also lays the conceptual and methodological foundation for higher level psychology coursework, equipping learners with the core knowledge, research skills, and academic conventions required for further study and professional pathways within the field of psychology.

Trainer Information

Dr. Inderbir Kaur Sandhu

Dr Inderbir Kaur Sandhu is an Associate Faculty at the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS). She holds a PhD in Psychology from the University of Cambridge and has close to 30 years of professional experience in psychology education, curriculum development, research, and consultancy within higher education and adult-learning contexts in Singapore and the region.

Dr Sandhu teaches a broad range of psychology modules at undergraduate and professional levels across multiple institutions, including introductory psychology, positive psychology, research methods, mental health, psychometrics and psychological testing, cognitive psychology, and social psychology. Her teaching experience includes institutions such as The School of Positive Psychology (Singapore), Universiti Putra Malaysia, and Universitas Negeri Malang (Indonesia). Her teaching approach emphasises conceptual clarity, application of psychological theories to real-life contexts, and the use of empirical evidence to support critical analysis of behaviour and mental processes.

In addition to teaching, Dr Sandhu works with universities in consultancy and programme development roles. She currently serves as a consultant to Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), contributing to the National Gifted and Talented Education Centre through teacher training, assessment development, and advisory work related to learner development and psychological assessment.

Her areas of expertise align closely with the PSY108 curriculum and include human development, learning theories, emotion and motivation, social and prosocial behaviour, personality, psychological disorders, and the relationship between stress and health. She is experienced in supporting learners to apply psychological concepts and empirical findings to everyday situations and contemporary issues.

Dr Sandhu is also a published author and researcher in psychology and human development. In recognition of her contributions to teaching quality, she received the Excellence in Teaching Award from the Singapore University of Social Sciences.
