Synopsis

The twentieth century can be called the Golden Age of Tamil prose. The advents of the Europeans and the advances in printing have made vast strides in prose possible. This course exposes students to a wide range of modern Tamil writing styles. Since the beginning of the 19th century, the development of Tamil prose has been closely aligned with India’s religious, social and political movements. Students will study the fiction, non-fiction, drama and novels of renowned authors from Tamil Nadu, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Singapore to learn different stylistic variations, contents and forms

Trainer Information

Dr. Ravindranath Selvarani earned her PhD in Tamil from Manonmaniam Sundaranar University in India and furthered her expertise with a Postgraduate Diploma in Education from the National Institute of Education in Singapore. Since 2011, she has been committed to teaching Tamil as a mother tongue to secondary school students, currently holding the position of Senior Teacher for Tamil Language at St. Joseph’s Institution. Her dedication to nurturing the next generation of Tamil speakers is evident in his efforts to instill a profound appreciation for their linguistic and cultural heritage. In 2025, she also published a book on Modern Singapore prose, contributing to the academic discourse in this field.
