Synopsis

TSL 505 Sociolinguistics and Education explores fundamental concepts and theories in sociolinguistics. Variation in language and language use are considered in relation to the variables of location, class, culture, gender, change and ideology. Special attention is placed on how an understanding of the operation of these variables bears on the issues of language policy, planning and education practice in Singapore and elsewhere.

Trainer Information


Dr. Carl JW Ng

Dr Carl JW Ng is a senior lecturer in the School of Humanities and Behavioural Sciences, and has professional experience in the fields of education, media and communications, and government policy. His expertise lies broadly in critical discourse studies and sociolinguistics, and his research focuses on issues of language, ideology and power in contemporary society, particularly in domains such as branding, (higher) education and political/policy communication. He has taught in the UK, Hong Kong and Singapore, and has given talks on topics such as Singapore’s linguistic landscape, the role of visual media in inciting negative sentiments, and policy communication, among others.
