Synopsis

This course explores the communication needs of persons with disabilities who experience challenges in language development and use. Participants will examine foundational and contemporary theories of language acquisition and communication, with attention to how various disabilities can influence communicative development, expression, and interaction. The course emphasizes the role of inclusive and accessible communication practices in promoting learning, participation, and social engagement. Participants will explore a range of strategies and tools—including assistive technologies, visual supports, and augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems—designed to support individuals with diverse communicative profiles. Through case-based learning and reflection, students (participants) will develop the knowledge and skills to create supportive environments that recognise communication as a human right and central to inclusion.
