Synopsis

MLL317 Singapore Malay Literature aims to provide students with an overview of the development of Malay Literature post 1965. It will examine to what extent Malay Literature in Singapore is similar and different from the literature of the other Malay speaking countries. The module will trace the development of Malay Literature in Singapore as a center of Malay publication from the colonial days and the impact of independence on the trajectory of Malay Literary development. It will discuss critically the differences in the focus of literary works vis-a-vis that of the surrounding countries and it will also debate the notion of national identity impacting Malay literary works in Singapore.
