Course Code: PLC515

Synopsis

This course is the phase where coaching shifts from external skill to internal coherence. Without the ability to observe and regulate their inner world, even competent coaches can be influenced by bias, emotional reactivity, or unexamined assumptions. This course equips learners to develop a self-authored coaching stance by cultivating the discipline of self-observation, learning to notice their thoughts, emotions, and reactions in real time. Central to this course is the practice of observing internal patterns during live coaching interactions. Learners develop the ability to detect subtle reactions, such as judgment, urgency, or discomfort, and return to a grounded, facilitative presence without imposing meaning or direction. Over time, this evolving awareness strengthens a more stable, intentional, and self-directed way of being in coaching practice. By the end of this course, learners will demonstrate the capacity to coach from a grounded, intentional, and self-directed stance. They remain neutral under pressure, navigate differences without imposition, and sustain presence in emotionally complex situations. The success of this course lies in developing coaches who can consistently observe, regulate, and refine their internal responses, and recognise how shifts in their internal awareness influence multiple areas of life and coaching practice, enabling whole-life aligned coaching.

Learning Outcome

  • Analyse the influence of internal cognitive, emotional, and perceptual processes on coaching practice, evaluating how bias, assumptions, and reactivity shape coaching presence and decision-making.
  • Critically evaluate the role of self-observation and reflective awareness in developing a self-authored coaching stance, examining the relationship between internal regulation, neutrality, and professional effectiveness.
  • Analyse and integrate theoretical perspectives on emotional regulation, attention, and adult development to explain how sustained coaching presence is cultivated in complex and ambiguous coaching contexts.
  • Demonstrate and regulate real-time self-observation during coaching interactions, applying awareness of thoughts, emotions, and impulses to maintain intentional, non-reactive responses.
  • Apply and evaluate strategies for managing bias, suspending assumptions, and maintaining neutrality, facilitating client-centred coaching conversations without imposition or interpretation.
  • Integrate and synthesise reflective practices—including journaling and feedback loops—to refine a self-authored coaching stance, sustaining presence, emotional steadiness, and alignment across coaching and broader life contexts.
