Synopsis
SWK510 Social Issues and Social Services in Singapore is an introductory course on the development of social work practice and social services in Singapore. The course begins by situating the development of social work in Singapore within the broader historical context of how social work became a profession in other countries. The development of social work in Singapore is also shaped by the country’s historical, political, social and economic contexts. The course also provides students with an in-depth understanding of key social issues shaping contemporary Singapore and the responses of the social service ecosystem. The course examines the development, structure and function of social services and the system including social service agencies, government organisations, community-based initiatives. Emphasis will be placed on understanding how cultural value, political priorities and global influences shape the social service landscape in Singapore.
