Overview
This Sociology degree programme covers a wide range of relevant contemporary subjects to provide an analysis of human behaviour and society in a globalised world. It will appeal to anyone interested in understanding their social, political and cultural environment and provide students with a strong foundation in analytical, theoretical and methodological skills applied to contemporary issues relating to globalisation and social change, medical sociology, social stratification (race, class and ethnicity), popular culture, family, gender, education and society, urban sociology, law and order, research methods in social sciences, and methods of data analysis. These are studied in light of developments in Singapore society, regionally as well as within a global context.
Our assessments include research projects to cultivate a practice-oriented, dynamic links between the curriculum and issues faced by individuals in urban Singapore. These core skills and knowledge are essential in today’s workplace and knowledge-based society, preparing our graduates for understanding a fast-changing and increasingly complex world and equipping them with a foundation for related careers.
Students may pursue Sociology as a single major or in combination with a Minor.
Career Prospects
Graduates with a general degree in Sociology who are proficient in analytical and research skills, versed in social trends, contemporary social issues, and in handling data are found in the civil service and public administration, in private and commercial institutions, in social service sectors, community and non-profit organisations. Sociology provides training for those in government and non-government organisations, in education, community and social development services, in the media and creative industries, and others.
Today's graduates are required to be adaptable and proficient in critical skills. As societal concerns become increasingly important through the proliferation of organisations for social purposes, and evident in the decisions of policy-makers, Sociology-trained graduates with their breadth and depth of societal knowledge and research skills are well placed to contribute within their professions and to society.
Programme Structure
BA Sociology
To graduate with a basic degree, students are required to complete 130 credit units (cu), which include:
- 20 cu of SUSS Core courses
- 50 cu of Major Compulsory courses
- 30 cu of Major Elective courses
- 30 cu of Free Electives or Minor
Bachelor (Hons) of Sociology
This programme has an honours option. Students who achieve a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 3.5 and above upon completion of their basic degree may be invited to enroll in the Honours programme, which will be offered only if the requisite number of students is met.
Graduating students who meet the eligibility criteria for an Honours classification will be awarded an honours degree based on aggregate academic performance measured by the CGPA assessed throughout the degree programme.
To graduate with an honours degree, students are to complete an additional 40 cu to achieve a total of 170 cu, which include:
- 30 cu of SUSS Core courses
- 100 cu of Sociology Major courses (inclusive of NIE499 Interdisciplinary Capstone Project (Interdisciplinary Capstone Project)
- 40 cu of Free Electives/Minor(Honours students are encouraged to use 10 cu from their Free Electives quota for Sociology Major courses.)
