Yi Jun’s Work Attachment Journey: A Story of Mentorship, Growth, and Discovery
For Yi Jun, stepping into the Mercedes-Benz office on her first day of work attachment (WA) was both thrilling and nerve-wracking. The journey that followed would not only transform her skills but also redefine her career aspirations.
The First Steps: Building Confidence
“I was honestly intimidated,” Yi Jun shared, recalling her initial experience meeting her customer excitement team and supervisor in Mercedes-Benz Singapore. But thanks to her mentor Zhiyuan’s advice, she quickly learned the value of open communication.
“Zhiyuan told me to be proactive and volunteer for projects that I am interested in. He also told me to make the best of my internship instead of shying away, if I am not given the opportunities that I want. He explained that good work creates a ripple effect in marketing, urging me to start building that momentum now,” Yi Jun said.
Taking this to heart, she initiated weekly check-ins with her supervisor, which became a turning point. These conversations opened doors to impactful projects, like leading the automation of manual tasks—a project that saved significant time across departments.
From Networking to Global Opportunities
Yi Jun’s internship wasn’t just about tasks; she also built connections through regular interactions with senior staff and gained insights into various career paths. One conversation even sparking encouragement to apply for overseas opportunities at Mercedes-Benz.
“I didn’t think this was possible at first,” Yi Jun admitted. Fellow interns also became a source of learning and inspiration, offering a window into different departments and perspectives.
Turning Challenges into Triumphs
Of course, the journey wasn’t without hurdles. During the earlier part of her internship, one of Yi Jun’s slide decks faced criticism.
“It stung,” she confessed. But rather than dwell on it, she dove into improving his presentation skills, discovering a talent for creating compelling, data-driven visuals.
Another challenge came when her automation ideas met resistance. Undeterred, Yi Jun refined her solutions, eventually earning her supervisor’s trust and approval.
“Seeing my ideas implemented was the most rewarding part,” Yi Jun shared.
The Power of Mentorship
Zhiyuan’s mentorship was a guiding light and a catalyst of change for Yi Jun’s work attachment. From practical tips like scheduling check-ins to creating a supportive Telegram community for mentees, Zhiyuan’s guidance made the difference.
“Having someone in your corner who genuinely wants you to succeed—it changes everything,” Yi Jun reflected.
Yi Jun’s advice to aspiring interns? “Don’t wait for opportunities—create them. Start those check-ins early, listen to feedback, and stay proactive.”
A Bright Future Ahead
Yi Jun’s journey at Mercedes-Benz is a testament to the power of mentorship, resilience, and taking initiative. As she looks ahead, she carries with her not just skills but also the confidence to embrace challenges and seize opportunities.
“Your work attachment isn’t just about the work,” Yi Jun concluded. “It’s about discovering who you are and what you’re capable of.”
