Ngee Ann Kongsi

The Ngee Ann Kongsi is a non-profit Teochew philanthropic organisation focused on educational, cultural and charitable activities in Singapore, while placing a deep emphasis on preserving the Teochew heritage. The organisation is an active advocate in education that funds scholarships for high-performing students and study awards to disadvantaged students.

In 2022, SUSS received a donation of SGD10 million from The Ngee Ann Kongsi to launch The Ngee Ann Kongsi Social Impact Hub, which seeks to strengthen social service delivery through programmes delivered by private or public agencies.

About the Grant

The NAK-SUSS Impact Grant was established to support founders who demonstrate coachability, resilience, and a deep passion for their impact ventures. It focuses on those with long-term impact potential, where there is a clear ability to create meaningful change and sustain it beyond the grant period. Additionally, the startup must show a strategic use of funds, with a well-thought-out plan for deploying the grant effectively over the next six months.

    Grant applicants may pitch for the NAK-SUSS Impact grant under two tracks:

    1. Gerontology Track
    2. Impact Track

    Eligibility

    1. Impact venture must operate in the space of Impact or Gerontology
    2. Team must consist of a minimum of 2 co-founders, of which:
      1. At least 1 is a Singapore Citizen / Singapore Permanent Resident
      2. At least 1 individual who is an SUSS Student (FT/PT/CET/PG/Alumni) and had completed the SUSS Venture Builder Programme
      3. Both Co-founders need to have a non-0% equity and collectively have >30% equity of the company
    3. At the point of acceptance, startup has to be incorporated as a Pte. Ltd. to receive grant
    4. Main applicant has not been a previous NAK-SUSS Impact Grant awardee

    Application Requirements

    1. Pitch Deck, which must include:

    • Cover Page: The title page clearly showing your startup name & logo
    • Problem Statement: Clearly articulate the problems identified, supported by evidence & validation.
    • Customer Persona: Define your target customer clearly.
    • Solution: Present how your solution solves the customer’s problem
    • Market Validation: Show proof of market desirability.
    • Market Size: Show that there is a sufficiently big market for your idea.
    • Business Model: Outline business model, potential revenue streams, providing a timeline and strategy for each.
    • Financial Projections: Include detailed financial projections, unit economics, and a breakdown of startup costs.
    • Go-to-Market Strategy: Present a timeline for your market entry strategy, identifying key activities and potential partnerships.
    • Impact Potential: Present clearly the measurable impact that can be created with your startup over time.
    • Competitive Analysis: Offer a realistic comparison to competitors, including direct comparisons and potential market advantages.
    • Unfair advantage/ Differentiation/ Moat: Highlight what distinguishes your game from competitors, focusing on unique content or features.
    • Grant utilisation: 1 slide indicating how your startup plans to utilise the S$25,000 or S$50,000 grant if awarded.
    • Team overview: Management team and accompanying advisors/mentors

    You may also choose to include any mockups/photos of prototypes if available

    2. One-Page Proposal (Grant Utilisation Brief)

    All applicants must submit a one-page proposal clearly outlining how the grant—S$25,000 or S$50,000, depending on the amount applied for—will be utilised.

    The proposal should include the following key elements:

    1. Startup Overview

      • Target Customer/ Beneficiary and Problem & Solution: Provide a brief introduction to the startup, identifying the target customer/ beneficiary, the problem they face, and the solution the startup offers.

      Example: "Our startup addresses the nutritional needs of the elderly by developing a range of easy-to-consume, nutritious soft foods."

    2. Grant Utilisation Plan

      • Strategic Direction: Describe the current direction and plan of the startup, including how the grant will be strategically used to support growth.
      • Key Milestones: Outline the critical milestones the startup aims to achieve with the grant (e.g., customer acquisition, product development). Each milestone should include a clear, measurable success metric.

      Example: "Milestone: Acquisition of 1,000 young seniors to the platform."

    3. Implementation and Financial Strategy

      • Timeline of Implementation: Provide a detailed timeline that outlines the key phases of the project and the expected dates for achieving each milestone. This should include a clear sequence of actions and the duration of each phase.

      Example: "Month 1: Product development; Month 2-3: Initial customer acquisition; Month 4: Marketing and scaling."

      • Allocation of Funds: Provide specific details on how the awarded grant will be utilised to support the project, including a breakdown of key expenditures.

    Note: The one-page document should serve as a summary of the plan. There is no limit to the number of appendices that can be included.

    Deliverables

    • Milestone(s) achievement: Submission of all justification documents within 3-month post-grant period. Provision of a one-page report summarising the following: Startup progress and Post-grant plans.
    • Attend all meetings with SUSS Account Manager(s), including mid-grant and post-grant check-ins. To provide the following during the meetings:
      • Project progress, mid-/ post-grant plans
      • Any relevant photos and videos
    • In the case of failure to meet any of the milestones (and lack of willingness to complete), provision of expenditure report will be mandatory, and a clawback may be possible. The expenditure report will have to reflect all the transactions related to the utilisation of the grant.
