Singapore has witnessed a dramatic increase in scams and cybercrime over recent years, with reported cases surging from 17,715 in 2020 to a staggering 55,810 in 2024. Alarmingly, cybercriminals managed to extract $1.1 billion from victims in 2024 alone.
Given Singapore’s affluence, extensive digital connectivity, culturally trusting nature, and fast-paced lifestyle, we have become prime targets for scammers. While the government has responded proactively with measures like the Protection from Scams Act (2025)—allowing banks to freeze suspicious transactions for periods ranging from 30 to 180 days—this legislation highlights our vulnerability and the urgent need to empower individuals in self-protection. But is reliance on regulation our only option?
