Synopsis of the Talk

Food Translation: Missed Steaks is a workshop which will explore why translating food is never merely a matter of changing words from one language into another. Food names and descriptions sit at the crossroads of language, culture, and appetite, so culinary translation must be sensitive to the purpose, audience and context of their work! This session introduces the fundamentals of food translation and examines how practitioners can preserve cultural identity, while sparking curiosity in readers unfamiliar with the cuisine. 

Participants will analyse and attempt to do their own translations of real examples (short ones!) of food writing. We’ll then discuss the choices, compromises, and creative strategies involved.  Ultimately, the workshop will highlight how food translation reveals broader sociocultural differences. Members of the public with an interest in language, food, or translation are highly welcome!

Speaker's Biodata

Ho Zhi Hui is an educator, writer and translator who did her undergraduate degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics at Oxford University before rediscovering her love for her mother tongue and pursuing her M.A. in Translation and Interpretation at a local university in her late twenties. She currently teaches at SUSS and NTU.
