The well-loved natural walls of Gua Damai and a newly explored area, Gua Lepak was a recent expedition completed by 16 SUSS rock climbers. It was the SUSS Outdoor Adventure Interest Group’s (ODAIG) third climbing trip to Batu Caves, Malaysia. The team challenged themselves on tougher routes and unfamiliar terrain over a 4-day trip.

Students pose together with smiles and anticipation on the second day of outdoor climbing – ready to conquer Gua Lepak as a team.
The demands for outdoor climbing require greater vigilance as navigation across unpredictable rock formations is required. This trained the climbers in adapting to the environment and staying focused. This trip not only built technical abilities but also fostered growth in resilience, confidence, and camaraderie.

With a big smile and steady grip, Indra Shami Kamsani (Year 1, Biomedical Engineering student) climbs with confidence and joy.
For Indra Shami Kamsani, a Year 1 Biomedical Engineering student, the trip was more than just an outdoor climbing experience. “The outdoor climbing was the initial attraction, but the people who came along truly made it memorable,” he shared. He described how belaying and supporting one another in the heat forged stronger bonds. The trip helped him build confidence in both his climbing and belaying abilities, while strengthening the community with fellow climbers. Indra added that being part of ODAIG has motivated him to improve his technique and inspired him to pursue the Level 2 climbing certification.

Ho Zachary (Year 1, Human Resource Management student) descending with a smile after a rewarding climb at Gua Damai
Year 1 Human Resource Management Student Ho Zachary echoed these sentiments. Determined to challenge himself, he attempted tougher routes and surprised himself with a successful 6B first attempt. He recalled one point where he thought he has reached his limit at a particularly difficult section, his arm went numb and he said, “Shocked by the lack of sensation in my hands and the exhaustion, I thought of giving up,” he shared. “Suddenly, a rally of ‘allez’ from my friends and their encouragement pushed me beyond my exhaustion, therefore completing the climb.” For Zachary, the experience highlighted the strength of ODAIG’s adventurous and caring community.

Anchored by Lee Jin Hui Perry (Digital Media Alumni) and Loo Song Yuan Branden (Year 2, Communications Student), Ho Zachary maintains a steady belay – ensuring the climber and belayer’s safety with teamwork and trust.
Despite the physical demands and sweltering heat, members consistently looked out for one another – offering water, shade, and encouragement throughout. For many, ODAIG has become more than an interest group; it’s a supportive network and an outlet for growth, especially during stressful times.
The Batu Caves trip was more than an outdoor adventure – it was a shared journey of challenge, discovery, and connection. ODAIG continues to be a space where students uplift one another and grow through the spirit of exploration, one climb at a time.
