In response to the common challenges faced by many Chinese clan associations in Singapore—such as the shortage of successors and the need to attract younger members—the Singapore Federation of Chinese Clan Associations (SFCCA) partnered with SUSS Academy to launch a series of leadership and governance training programmes. The goal: to empower associations with the skills, strategies, and inspiration to strengthen their long-term sustainability.

The first series features three sessions covering Governance and Financial Management, Strategic Leadership and Succession Planning, and Diversity, Inclusion, and volunteer management. The first two sessions, held in July, were fully subscribed with 35 participants. Attendees gained practical insights into governance systems, leadership development, and financial transparency, while cross-association group discussions and panel sharing created a vibrant exchange of ideas.

SFCCA President Chua Thian Poh noted, “A stable and transparent system builds credibility and makes it easier to attract young people.” Participant James Ong, Secretary-General of the Singapore Qionghai Association, reflected that clan associations could learn from SMEs by introducing revenue-generating events to fund future activities sustainably. Meanwhile, Henry Ng, President of the Wong Clan Association, emphasised, “With a clear mission and direction, strategy-setting and future planning become much smoother.

The third session, “Diversity, Inclusion and Volunteer Management,” will take place in September, with the second series already in the pipeline—continuing the momentum to inject fresh perspectives and energy into Singapore’s clan associations.
