Jaren Chiam, a Year 3 Master of Psychology student at the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS), proudly represented Singapore at the inaugural Barebow Asia Championship in Bangkok, Thailand from 4 to 6 July 2025. Selected and endorsed by the Archery Association of Singapore, he was part of the nation's first-ever delegation to this prestigious event, marking a significant milestone in his athletic career.

The championship presented both an honor and a formidable challenge for Jaren, as it was his debut international competition under the TeamSG banner. Competing against full-time barebow archers from across Asia proved to be an invaluable learning experience. While no medals were secured this time, Jaren gained tremendous insights from observing techniques and building camaraderie with both Singaporean teammates and regional competitors.

During the post-event review, TeamSG Manager highlighted several strengths that defined the team's performance. The archers demonstrated remarkable resilience and confidence, with their mature mindset proving advantageous in high-pressure situations. What stood out particularly was the team's exceptional cohesion - despite coming from different clubs and having only two months of combined training, they supported each other as one united force. Their adaptability in unfamiliar surroundings was noteworthy too, with team members maintaining excellent situational awareness throughout the competition, facilitated by their real-time communication via a dedicated group chat. These positive takeaways have left the team motivated and already looking ahead to the 2026 championship in Malaysia with renewed determination.

For Jaren personally, the experience revealed important areas for growth. Balancing barebow with his primary discipline of compound archery requires more structured and consistent training sessions. He also recognized the need for earlier equipment optimization, particularly in fine-tuning his bow and arrows before major competitions. While he had achieved personal bests during training, translating that performance to the competitive arena remains a key focus area moving forward.
