Date: 13 Sep 2025

News Type:Event Highlights

School/Department: School of Science and Technology

As part of Nation by Design, this exhibition explores how digital media, drawing, painting, and ceramics contribute to Singapore’s transformation into a liveable and lovable city. Responding to the festival’s Design Impact pillar, SUSS students from art education and digital media programmes investigate themes of care and sustainability through diverse creative approaches, ranging from digital media to traditional artistic expressions. Their works reflect the evolving relationship between heritage, community, and responsible material use, demonstrating how creativity can inspire a more thoughtful and resilient urban landscape.

Inspired by Social Game 2 by Salifou Lindo, this drawing series reimagines how visual storytelling fosters social cohesion in an ever-changing city. By experimenting with sustainable drawing practices—such as repurposing materials and minimising waste, students express Singapore’s cultural vibrancy through line, texture, and movement. These works highlight the importance of preserving social narratives while embracing innovation in artistic technique.

Referencing Tan Choh Tee’s The Thieves’ Market, this painting project reflects on Singapore’s rich history while reinterpreting urban spaces through themes of care and sustainability. Students examine the balance between heritage conservation and urban progress, questioning how thoughtful design choices impact community well-being. By using sustainable painting techniques and mixed media approaches, they create works that celebrate the evolving cityscape while advocating for responsible urban development.

Clay, with its organic and transformative qualities, embodies sustainability in its purest form. This series of ceramic sculptures explores diverse themes, ranging from personal symbols and abstract forms to representations of everyday items. Students engage in the tactile and sensory process of shaping clay, using it to convey emotions, identity, and conceptual ideas. By embracing sustainable material practices—such as repurposing clay and mindful firing techniques, their works demonstrate how ceramics can be both a deeply personal and environmentally conscious art form.

Through 3D modelling, animation, and virtual reality, digital media students explore how digital tools create meaningful impact. 3D projects, such as the tank and aircraft, demonstrate how digital prototyping reduces material waste, while Doggo, the SUSS ambassador, highlights the role of storytelling in national identity. Animation projects, such as Container Accommodation for Student Hostel and Outdoor Solar Charger Kit User Guide, address urban sustainability and renewable energy. The Virtual Reality 360 Documentary on Historical Spaces and Places preserves heritage, while the Financial Literacy VR Game makes learning engaging through gamification. By merging technology with storytelling, these works show how design fosters sustainability, accessibility, and community connections.
