In celebration of the Chinese New Year, the SUSS Production Interest Group (PDIG) collaborated with Canon Singapore, the SMU Photography Club (SMUSAIC), the Photographic Society of NUS (NUSPS), and the SP Photography Club (SPP) for a photowalk. This collaborative photowalk around Chinatown aimed to explore participants' personal interpretations of the holiday and nurture their shared love for photography. This event provided a platform for a community of photography enthusiasts to capture the festive atmosphere, foster cultural appreciation, and build meaningful connections.

The trail took participants on a three-hour journey through three iconic locations: Chinatown Market, People’s Park Complex, and New Bridge Road. The photowalk began at Maxwell MRT, where participants were split into small groups, encouraging interactions between schools. Participants wandered freely, stopping whenever a scene caught their eye, capturing photographs that showed their interpretation of the Chinese New Year amidst the festive streets and heritage architecture.

As our first stop, Chinatown Complex was surrounded by bustling market stalls, people, and festive decorations that reflected the vibrant spirit of the Year of the Horse. Everyone in their respective groups set out on their own to explore the area, capturing candid moments and details that inspired them.

“My favourite location to capture is the Chinatown Market because it is the heart and soul of Chinatown itself,” said Zeti, a PDIG Events Director. Many participants felt the same, as the location offered an authentic glimpse into the everyday life and culture of Chinatown during the festive season. “It’s a colourful, vibrant, and chaotic place to photograph. You can see everyone moving through life; it has a lot of expression to it,” she added.

After spending time capturing the spirit of Chinatown Complex, the groups reconvened before heading to a different perspective at People’s Park Complex. The space revealed a broad cityscape view, allowing participants to experiment with wider shots and architectural details. Taking advantage of the view, the group stopped to take a photo together before moving on. As Francis from Canon described it,  “The rooftop is my favourite venue as it provides a panoramic, eye-level view of the surrounding high-rise buildings.”

The photowalk concluded with a city trail along New Bridge Road, featuring landmarks such as Coleman Bridge, the Old Hill Street Police Station, Central Fire Station, and the Peranakan Museum. Each location presented unique visual elements, from skyline views to bold colours.
