SUSS Canoeing CG at the Inter-Tertiary & Alumni Canoeing Championships 2026

The SUSS Canoeing Competition Group (CG) participated in the Inter-Tertiary & Alumni Canoeing Championships (ITCC) 2026, held on 11 April 2026 at MacRitchie Reservoir. This annual tertiary competition brought together athletes from universities, polytechnics, and alums groups across Singapore. Representing SUSS, the team fielded 11 seasoned and emerging athletes who competed with grit and determination, clinching 3rd place overall in the tertiary category.

The championship featured kayaking and canoeing events across 200m, 500m, and 1000m distances, including heats, finals, and timed finals. Categories included Novice, Open, Mixed, and Past vs Present divisions, testing athletes’ sprint endurance, technical skill, and mental resilience.
Coach Benjamin commented on the team’s performance, sharing:

“Team SUSS performed very well during ITCC 2026. I am proud to see the resilience built over the weeks leading up to this championship. The effort put in was evident throughout race day, and I can see that they are motivated to improve further moving forward.”

Elisha Daniel Lee, Bachelor’s in Social Work, Year 1, made his sprint race debut in the Novice Men JK1 500m event, competing against strong opponents. Despite it being his first sprint competition and his participation across multiple events, he delivered a commendable performance, finishing 4th in his timed final, demonstrating resilience and composure throughout.

Ng Elizabeth Rachel, Bachelor’s in Human Resource Management, Year 1, also made her sprint debut in the Novice Women JK1 500m event. Despite the pressure of her first major sprint race, she delivered a strong performance in the finals, finishing 4th, showing determination and competitive spirit.

Team SUSS Canoeing also fielded its only Men’s K2 crew, with Min Thein Khant Kyaw, Bachelor’s in Supply Chain Management, Year 1, making his debut in his first race with the team. Competing alongside his partner, he gained valuable race experience while facing strong crews from other institutions.

In the Women’s K2 500m event, Ng Xiang Ru Annabelle, Graduate Diploma in Adult Learning, Year 1, and Lee Wei Ling Geraldine, Graduate Diploma in Analytics and Visualisation, Year 1, delivered a strong performance in the heats, securing 2nd place to advance to the finals. Their composure and execution of race strategy played a key role in their qualification.

In the finals, the pair maintained their strong form, finishing 2nd and earning a silver medal for SUSS. Despite balancing work, studies, and other commitments, their dedication to training was reflected in their performance.

Annabelle shared:
“Thankful to SUSS for the opportunity to race. It has been a while since Wei Ling and I competed together, and we are grateful for the chance to return to racing despite our work, family, and studies. It is a reminder that nothing is impossible when we set our hearts and minds to it.”

In the sprint events, Tan Choon Hau, Bachelor’s in Finance, Year 1, delivered a standout performance, securing 1st place in the 200m event and earning SUSS its first gold medal of the competition.

In the Men’s C2 500m event, Tan Boon Yang, Bachelor’s in Sports and PE, Year 2, and Goh Glenn Wey, Master of Intellectual Property and Innovation Management, Year 1, faced strong competition from experienced paddlers. After earlier individual races, the duo regrouped to deliver a strong performance, finishing 2nd and securing silver.

They later progressed to the Past vs Present event, where they competed against top crews from ITCC and alums teams. Despite the limited recovery time between races, they secured a second silver medal in the C2 200m category.

Boon Yang shared:

“Being able to race at full effort and compete strongly against other institutions has been fulfilling. The effort put into training showed in the results. As captain, I am proud of the team’s overall performance and hope we continue enjoying the sport while improving.”

Glenn reflected:
“Despite starting full-time work and switching between kayak and canoe disciplines, I found joy in returning to canoeing. Training only on weekends made each session meaningful. Crossing the finish line knowing we gave our best made the experience rewarding.”

Bernice Ng Shi Hui, Bachelor’s in Accountancy, Year 1, also delivered a strong debut performance in the Women’s C1 200m event, securing 1st place against competitive paddlers, including national-level athletes.

She shared:

“It was meaningful to race again at the university level and represent SUSS Canoeing. I am proud of the team’s performance and look forward to continuing to improve in the years ahead.”

Overall, SUSS Canoeing delivered a strong showing at ITCC 2026, securing multiple podium finishes and achieving 3rd place overall in the tertiary category. The team demonstrated resilience, adaptability, and competitive spirit across all events.

The championship highlighted key areas for development, including sprint execution, endurance, and race strategy, which will inform future training plans. The team extends its appreciation to the organisers, coaches, and supporters for their continued guidance and support.
