SUSS Archers Shine at the NUS Indoor Archery Championships 2026

The SUSS Archery Competition Group (CG) participated in the NUS Indoor Archery Championships 2026, held on 13th to 14th June. This annual event brought together archers from educational institutions and archery clubs across Singapore, fostering a high level of competitive spirit and sportsmanship. With every arrow, the team fought with confidence and determination, bringing glory to the SUSS name.

The competition featured two challenge categories, in which our archers participated: the Institutional Challenge and the NUS Challenge. The Institutional Challenge saw archers from ITEs, polytechnics and universities compete in the qualification rounds, individual elimination matches, and team elimination matches. Similarly, in the NUS Challenge, archers from various institutions and local clubs competed in the same events. Throughout the competition, the team clinched medals across multiple categories. Veteran archer Goh Ming Min Carissa delivered a stellar performance, clinching a bronze medal in the qualification round and a silver medal in the Compound Open Women team elimination alongside teammates Maedyn Soh and Kathy Kwang in the Institutional Challenge. Claudia Lai Wai Ying competed in shoot-off matches in the Recurve Intermediate Women category and gained valuable lessons from those high-pressure moments. Recurve-turned-compound archer Ang Yu Wei made his compound debut at this competition, securing a first-place finish in the Compound Open Men team elimination alongside teammates Tok Wee Peng and Ernst Kwok in the Institutional Challenge.

The SUSS Archery Team is celebrating an impressive haul of eight medals across the Compound Open Men, Compound Open Women, and Recurve Open Men categories.

For Goh Ming Min Carissa, Bachelor of Early Childhood Education with Minor in English Language, Year 3, this competition was a personal milestone as she entered her 10th year as an archer. Carissa's journey has not always been smooth-sailing; rather, it was the difficult moments that helped her rediscover the joy of shooting: "Medals do not always equate to winning. Do not get me wrong, it feels good to win. However, winning also brings about added pressure to always be at my best. Going into this competition, I wanted to take that pressure off. I told myself to enjoy every moment." Carissa found that interactions with her teammates and friends encouraged her to relax and have fun despite the high-stress competition environment. Despite winning the bronze medal in the qualification round and silver medal in the Compound Open Women team elimination, she reflected that "it is the people that shape each experience, and to me, experiencing joy while doing something I love is the true winning moment."

For Claudia Lai Wai Ying, Bachelor of Science in Finance, Year 2, this competition gave rise to her first shoot-off experience as she competed in the Recurve Intermediate Women's individual elimination match: "I kept telling myself to focus on my form and keep pushing. After shooting that one arrow, I looked back to see the whole team standing behind me to support me, and I was super relieved." Claudia then went on to win that match. She faced another shoot-off in the individual elimination before competing in yet another during the team elimination match with teammates Vu Thi Ngan Ha and Inez Ong. Claudia shared this competition experience as a learning opportunity both as an archer and as a teammate: "Looking at the medallists encourages me to become a better archer. I have also gotten to experience the joy and team spirit that we share when our teammates win, and I hope to support them just as much as they supported me."

For Ang Yu Wei, Bachelor of Science in Psychology with Minor in Criminology, Year 1, the veteran recurve archer entered the competition and made his compound debut: "I have competed in archery before, but stepping onto the shooting line felt different. Same sport, same target, same nerves — but an entirely different bow in my hands." He shared that the switch from recurve to compound brought both advantages and disadvantages. Still, the mental aspect of archery remained the same: "Stepping into a whole new discipline did bring with it a degree of uncertainty, particularly not knowing how I would stack up against other compound archers who were likely far more experienced in compound archery. What helped me stay composed was a piece of advice from my coach: focus on the shot, not on hitting the 10s." Yu Wei's compound debut resulted in a gold medal in the Compound Open Men team elimination, a testament to his belief in leaving it all on the shooting line without any regrets.

The SUSS archers demonstrated courage and resilience as they competed against strong opponents, forging new friendships with each match. The athletes' achievements at this competition show continued perseverance and dedication to training. Still, it is through interactions and off-the-shooting-line moments that the bond among teammates and friends continues to strengthen.

The NUS Indoor Archery Championships 2026 showcased the team's dedication to training and the hard work of every individual. Under the guidance of Coach Keith Teo (Recurve), Coach Erwan Zulfaqar (Compound), Coach Shawn Tay (Compound), and Student Life Staff Mentor, Vonica Lim, the team continues to grow and shine at each competition, gaining valuable experiences that push the archers to reach their fullest potential.
