Programme Code: GDPA

Overview

As our population gets more sophisticated in its mental health needs, clients are looking beyond symptom reduction and coping skills. As such, there is a growing need for psychodynamic psychotherapy (PP), as is reflected by the long waiting-list in hospitals where this form of therapy is available. In response to the growing need for specialised competencies in mental health and psychological support services, the Singapore University of Social Sciences now offers the Graduate Diploma in Psychodynamic Approaches (GDPA), with an option to exit with a Graduate Certificate in Psychodynamic Approaches (GCPA).

Developed in collaboration with Changi General Hospital (CGH), the GDPA blends clinical insights and expertise with psychodynamic theory to provide professionals with practical competencies and skills to seamlessly integrate psychodynamic theory and real-world application in treating complex mental health problems. The programme will be taught by certified psychiatrists and psychologists from CGH. Students will get to master practical skills anchored in psychodynamic theory, with the unique advantage of potential clinical placements in CGH’s Psychological Medicine department, where possible. This experience allows translation of clinical knowledge into actionable skills, merging psychodynamic principles with hands-on practice in patient care.

Career Prospects

Graduates can look forward to building a career in individual counselling and psychotherapy. Our faculty consists of local and international psychodynamic therapy scholars and practitioners who will equip students with clinical competencies to facilitate the exploration of their clients’ intrapsychic dynamics and interpersonal patterns, with the aim to enhance their personal insight and growth.

Programme Structure

The programme offers flexibility to students in choosing courses that are in alignment with their interest and professional development. Students who complete COU571, COU567, and COU577 may choose to exit the programme with a GCPA. GCPA students can return to complete the remaining courses and stack up to a GDPA.

The GDPA will offer 4 courses (5cu  each) and a psychodynamic practicum(10cu), totalling 30cu. This will equip candidates with the fundamental knowledge, skills, and values for psychodynamic work. These 5 courses are all compulsory courses of which 2 courses (COU567 & COU571) are currently offered as electives in the MCOU programme. Candidates for the GDPA are required to complete all 5 courses within a maximum candidature of 2 years.

The graduation requirements and candidature of the proposed programme is as follows:
