Overview

This specialist certificate will train competent and proficient Malay-English bilinguals in understanding the history, concepts, approaches as well as current issues in Malay-English translation. It will also enhance students linguistic competence by improving their ability to convey meaning appropriately in their translation.

Students will engage in practical sessions of translating texts of different genres as well as pertinent discussions on language varieties, genre, two-way translation, discourse analysis and the future of translation in Singapore. The added focus on the differences between Bahasa Melayu and Bahasa Indonesia will provide students with insights into the complexities of translating in the Malay language and enhance their appreciation of cultural sensitivity and mediation as the Malay world becomes more global.

Together, the courses will provide the aspiring translator with a wholistic and multi-focal understanding of what goes on into their translation and help to build a deeper awareness of the meaning-mediation process when they translate.
