Course Code: BME102

Synopsis

BME102 covers an introduction to biomedical equipment technology, involves the application of electronics in the measurement of bio-signals such as the basic principles of various types of signals, electrodes and transducers, the need for the bioelectric amplifier, differential amplifier and the principle of electrocardiogram and ECG amplifier. Students will study the basics of Fourier series and its application to different waveforms, understand the concept of noise and its relationship with the signal, the problems associated with the acquisition of biopotentials. They will also learn different bioelectric amplifier configurations and the fundamentals of an electrocardiogram recording.

Trainer Info

Mr. Gwee Choon Siong is a Senior Lecturer in Biomedical Engineering at Ngee Ann Polytechnic, with over three decades of experience in biomedical instrumentation, electrical engineering, and the development of medical devices. He holds an MSc in Biomedical Instrumentation (Distinction) from the University of Dundee and a BEng (Hons) in Electrical Engineering, complemented by prestigious awards such as the Raffles Scholarship (Chevening) and multiple teaching and public service accolades. His strong foundation in biomedical electronics, clinical engineering, and electrical safety makes him especially well‑equipped to guide learners in the Essentials of Bioelectronics.

Dr. Clement Yuen is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Science and Technology at SUSS, holding a Ph.D. in Electrical & Electronic Engineering from NTU and a B.Eng. in the same field. He has over 15 years of research experience in bioelectronic instrumentation and diagnostics—particularly with advanced technologies like surface-enhanced Raman scattering and biomedical sensing—and currently teaches the Essentials of Bioelectronics module, which covers bio-signal acquisition, amplifier design, and signal processing.

Dr. Yuen is also an entrepreneur and inventor, holding a U.S. patent in malaria diagnostics and having co-authored a book chapter and multiple high-impact journal articles. His blend of strong academic credentials, hands-on device development, and intellectual property expertise makes him an outstanding mentor for trainees exploring bioelectronics and medical instrumentation.
