Course Code: BPM115

Synopsis

BPM115 Materials Technology provides students an insight into material properties and their applicability in different buildings, facilities and event venues. Key considerations may include speed of construction, balancing durability with expediency and even corporate image. Students learn to evaluate each material that may make up a component, and several sub-systems that may make up a system to serve a function within a building or during and event. Several systems (e.g weather screens, ventilation fans) would be used to illustrate these considerations so as to demonstrate the rationale for selecting certain materials.
Level: 1

  • Discuss alternative materials
  • Demonstrate an ability to recommend materials selection for a built environment project
  • Appraise the quality of material used in a project

Who Should Attend

Executive who requires knowledge in Building and Project Management.

Relevance of Course to employment/upskilling/reskilling

This course equips learners with essential knowledge of building material properties, selection criteria, performance considerations, and common material failures. These skills are directly relevant for roles in construction, facilities management, and project specification, where informed material choices impact durability, safety, sustainability, cost, and lifecycle performance. It also supports upskilling and reskilling by strengthening learners’ ability to evaluate materials, apply quality assurance processes, and recommend appropriate materials for different building systems.

Admissions Prerequisites

  • Diploma or an equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
