Synopsis

This course addresses the psychological factors and skills needed to facilitate peak performances in sport and other competitive situations. The focus of study examines the latest research and best practices of sport performance enhancement through the application of basic mental skills; composure and concentration skills; confidence and adversity-coping skills; cohesion and team dynamics strategies; and the periodization of mental skills training.

Learning Outcome

Relevance of Course to Employment / Upskilling / Reskilling

BSE309 Applied Sports Psychology equips students with the psychological factors and skills needed to facilitate peak performance in sports and other competitive situations. It is relevant to students who work in the physical education and sport domains and are seeking to enhance their athletes’ performances through a better understanding of the theoretical underpinnings and research evidence supporting the appropriate application of mental skills in sport performance. BSE309 supports upskilling by working professionals by imparting knowledge and skills in sport performance enhancement through the application of applied sport psychology.

 

Admission Prerequisites

  • Diploma or an equivalent qualification from a recognised institution

  • Sports-related diploma (by reputable colleges or polytechnics) or A-levels with demonstrated sport competencies

      About the Trainer

      Mr Edgar Tham

      Edgar is the founder and Chief Sport & Performance Psychologist at SportPsych Consulting, Southeast Asia’s largest sport and performance consulting company with offices in Singapore (HQ), Indonesia & the Philippines.

      He is currently an associate faculty teaching psychology and sports/PE at the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS), and also lectures at external university programmes from Edinburgh Napier University UK (Sport Psychology), University of Sterling UK (Issues in Sport), & the University of Wollongong Australia (Psychology of Physical Activity & Health).

      Edgar is the co-author of Mental Toughness Strategies of the World’s Greatest Athletes (with Dr Daniel Weigand) and In the Zone: The Mindset for Peak Performance in Sport (an audio book). He uses the lessons learned from champion elite sport as a metaphor for teaching the principles of peak performance under pressure and stress.

        • A written request for a refund must be submitted and is subject to approval. 
        • If written notice of withdrawal is given within the cooling off period and before the course start date, a full refund of the fees paid less an administrative charge of $110.00 (exclusive of GST) will be given. 
        • No refund will be given for withdrawal thereafter. 
        • The cooling off period is defined as 7 working days after payment of course fee. 

         

        Course Completion Requirements

        • Participants are required to achieve at least 75% attendance and pass any prescribed examinations/assessments or submit any course/project work (if any) under the course requirement.
        • Participants are required to complete all surveys and feedbacks related to the course
