Course Code: QSM201

Synopsis

Construction Measurement (1 of 4) Civil and Structural Works explains the roles of the quantity surveyor in the construction process, covers the fundamental principles for construction measurement and focuses on the measurement of Civil and Structural works in projects. It also develops students’ understanding and skills in the measurement of building works involving general site clearance and excavation, reinforced concrete works below ground, structural steelwork, piling and general external works.
Level: 2
Credit Units: 5
Presentation Pattern: EVERY JAN

Topics

  • The roles of the Quantity Surveyor in the Construction Process
  • Preparation of the Bills of Quantities
  • Interpretation of the general principles of SMM2
  • Basic Mensuration and the use of traditional dimension papers
  • Measurement of site clearance and general excavation works involving pits and trenches
  • Measurement of reinforced concrete and associated works below ground
  • Measurement of timber piles
  • Measurement of precast reinforced concrete piles
  • Measurement of Inspection Chambers and associated drainage work below ground
  • Measurement of culverts, driveways and carparks
  • Measurement of structural steelwork involving stanchions, beams and associated fittings
  • Measurement of portal frame and roof trusses

Learning Outcome

  • Explain the purpose and principles of measuring quantities
  • Identify scope and interpret drawings and specifications for measuring sub-structure works, reinforced concrete works, structural steelwork, piling and external works.
  • Interpret the principles and rules of the Standard Method of Measurement for Building Works 2 (SMM2) relating to the measuring sub-structure works, reinforced concrete works, structural steelwork, piling and external works.
  • Prepare a list of items based on drawings and specifications for measuring quantities relating to Civil and Structural Steelwork.
  • Apply the principles and rules of SMM2 to measure sub-structure works, reinforced concrete works, structural steelwork, piling and external works.
  • Demonstrate ability to ensure that quantities measured are accurate and consistent with SMM2 principles through bulk check.

Who Should Attend

Executive, surveyor in building sector.

Relevance of Course to employment/upskilling/reskilling

This course equips learners with foundational measurement skills for civil and structural works—covering excavation, reinforced concrete, piling, structural steelwork, and external works—using SMM2 principles. These skills are directly relevant for quantity surveying and cost management roles that require accurate and consistent quantification of core structural elements, supporting upskilling and reskilling for roles in cost estimation, tender preparation, and project budgeting.
