Synopsis

This one-day course is designed for participants working with associations who are looking to enhance their understanding of diversity and inclusion while also effectively managing volunteers. Participants will explore key concepts such as unconscious bias, inclusive leadership, and allyship, while gaining practical insights on volunteer recruitment, retention, and development in a modern environment. The course will also focus on building robust volunteer management frameworks and communicating impact to stakeholders, ensuring long-term success and meaningful contributions.

About the Trainer

Ms Joanna Tan
Joanna Tan is a purpose-driven leader with a deep commitment to advancing the well-being of disadvantaged communities. Over the past two decades, she has dedicated her career to the social services, healthcare, and education sectors, consistently delivering impactful, scalable, and sustainable outcomes for vulnerable groups across Singapore.

Joanna was the Chief Executive Officer of Children’s Wishing Well from 2018 to 2025. Under her leadership, Children’s Wishing Well has won the Charity Transparency Award accorded by the Ministry of Culture Community and Youth (MCCY) yearly since 2019. It has also grown from a single centre to 10 sites across Singapore, serving thousands of children and youth from low-income families and disadvantaged backgrounds.

Earlier, she had served two decades in the healthcare sector, mainly at the Ministry of Health (MOH) where she was involved in managing SARS and H1N1; represented Singapore at WHO, UN, ASEAN; negotiated several FTAs; and planned several public hospitals, health policies, and healthcare programs.

She was awarded many prizes and awards over the two decades, including the National Day Award Commendation Medal 2018 for her achievements and contributions to public service. She graduated from Harvard University in 2008 (Masters of Public Health) and Kings College London in 2001 (Masters in Science), both sponsored under Singapore Government scholarships.

Joanna has been volunteering actively in various local and overseas charity organisations consistently since her teenage years. From 2013 – 2015, she was the Chairman of O’Joy Care Services, a local social service agency specialising in mental health, and continues to serve as its Board Director currently as Head of Fundraising Committee. From 2023 – 2027, she serves as the Chairman of NTUC Health Medifund and Financial Assistance Committees. She is also an associate lecturer at the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) and a member of the School Advisory Committee of Yusof Ishak Secondary School.

1 Mid-Career Enhanced Subsidy: Singaporeans aged 40 and above may enjoy subsidies up to 90% of the course fees.
2 Enhanced Training Support for SMEs: SME-sponsored employees (Singaporean Citizens and PRs) aged 21 and above may enjoy subsidies up to 90% of the course fees.

  • Participants are required to achieve at least 75% attendance and pass any prescribed examinations/assessments or submit any course/project work (if any) under the course requirement.
  • Participants are required to complete all surveys and feedbacks related to the course.
  • The course fees are reviewed annually and may be revised. The University reserves the right to adjust the course fees without prior notice.
  • Singapore University of Social Sciences reserves the right to amend and/or revise the above schedule without prior notice.

Course Withdrawal and Refund

Request for withdrawal from a course must be submitted to SUSS Academy formally in writing.

  • Course Withdrawal before Application Close Date: No charges.
  • Course Withdrawal after course confirmation: 50% of the full course fee with an administration fee imposed.
