Synopsis:

The accelerating pace of digitalisation has transformed the way we teach, learn, and connect. While these tools create opportunities for greater flexibility, access, and personalisation, they also raise important questions. How can education remain relational and anchored in human values? How do we guard against depersonalisation, isolation, and an over-reliance on technology?

The theme “Humanising Learning in a Digital Age: Cultivating Connection, Compassion, and Competence” reflects this imperative to re-centre the human in education. It underscores that technology should enhance, not replace, the relationships and values that make learning meaningful. Faculty Learning Symposium (FLS) 2025 invites educators to reimagine how digital transformation can be harnessed to deepen connection, compassion, and competence in every learner’s journey.

Objectives:

The goal of the FLS 2025 is to enable participants to:

Foster human-centred pedagogical innovation by learning from local and global experts, and student perspectives, to design compassionate and connected digital learning that is relational, empathetic and effective.
Build a collaborative community of practice through shared experiences and perspectives with colleagues, students, and international thought leaders, fostering a sense of shared purpose in advancing learner-centred education in a digital age.
Advance faculty professional growth by strengthening competence in humanising learning with contemporary pedagogies, technology, and reflective practice. Through engagement with experts and student voices, faculty will enhance their competence in creating meaningful, humanised learning environments that balance academic rigour with care for learners’ needs.

How Faculty Can Harness Generative AI for Enhanced Learning: Fostering Learner Motivation and Engagement with R2D2 and TEC-VARIETY

For the past year, with every turn of the page someone seems to be shouting AI, AI, AI and still more AI. For many educators, this has meant drastically rethinking their traditional instructional ideas and approaches. However, far too many others have yet to recognize or admit to the pedagogical possibilities and necessities. Perhaps they may need a little prompting or prompt assistance. Or perhaps they just need understandable models, examples, and frameworks to guide them. In response, in this session, Curt Bonk will reveal dozens of the ways educators are already employing generative AI in their instruction. For many of these examples, he will detail how they relate to his powerful Read, Reflect, Display, and Do (i.e., R2D2) model for addressing the diverse learners of this planet as well as his TEC-VARIETY framework for online motivation; the latter of which he will make available two free and open books for the participants. With these frameworks in hand, instructors can feel more confident in utilizing AI to foster learner curiosity, autonomy, interactivity, engagement, feedback, meaningful learning, and much more. Participants will also have the tools and resources to address and hopefully overcome the limitations of generative AI tools such as ChatGPT. Attend this session and begin contemplating your next steps into the fast-expanding world of AI in education.

Connections are everything: How trusting relationships drive learning and engagement

Research demonstrates that student relationships with faculty and peers are crucial to academic success and personal well-being in higher education. Online courses can make it more difficult for students to feel connected and to trust their peers and professors. Drawing on almost 500 interviews with students, faculty in U.S. higher education – and on new, international research about trust in higher education – this session will explore human connections as a practical, flexible, and scalable approach to engaging, inspiring, and challenging students.
