Department of Gerontology, Inclusion & Active Living — GIAL
Growing Inclusively, Actively, for Life
Our cluster brings together three important areas: Gerontology, Disability Studies, and Physical Education (PE). While each discipline has its own focus, all three share a common goal of improving quality of life, health, inclusion, and well-being across the lifespan.
The Gerontology programmes take an interdisciplinary and applied approach to understanding ageing and later life. Students examine the social, behavioural, and health dimensions of ageing, and develop knowledge and skills to respond to the opportunities and challenges of an ageing population. By integrating theory, research, and practice, the programmes prepare students to contribute to policies, programmes, services, and innovations that enable people to age well.
The Disability Studies programme focuses on supporting persons with disabilities and diverse learning needs across different stages of life. Students gain knowledge and practical skills to promote inclusion, learning, and employment for individuals with disabilities and their families.
The Physical Education programme promotes active and healthy lifestyles through sport, exercise, and physical activity. Students attain knowledge and skills in sport science, instructional strategy and method, and learn how movement, recreation, outdoor activities, and sports participation throughout one’s life contribute to physical, social, and emotional well-being of individuals in schools, communities, and organisations.
Together, the cluster is committed to building a more inclusive and caring society. Through teaching, research, and partnerships with community organisations, schools, healthcare providers, and social service agencies, we prepare graduates to make a meaningful impact in the lives of individuals, families, and communities.
