The 2025 Dr Alan HJ Chan 'Spirit of Singapore' Book Prize
The Dr Alan HJ Chan ‘Spirit of Singapore’ Book Prize was established through a generous $1 million donation from the late Dr Alan HJ Chan to the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS). The Book Prize, which was first awarded in 2023, aims to recognise the best work of fiction or non-fiction that embodies the spirit of Singapore and inspires compassion, empathy, voluntarism and activism, thereby contributing to the development of Singapore society and the Singapore identity. The winner will receive a cash prize of S$30,000.
A strong believer in education, Dr Alan Chan completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard University in July 1979 as a successful entrepreneur in his forties and was awarded an honorary doctorate by Bond University, Australia, in February 2014.
The purpose of Dr Chan’s gift is to promote an understanding and appreciation of the spirit of Singapore and the importance of social good in the making of Singapore society. The spirit of Singapore is broadly defined as the values that have been indispensable in shaping the development of modern Singapore. These values include equality, diversity, religious harmony, meritocracy, pragmatism, resilience, and an emphasis on education, community, innovation, creativity and artistic endeavour.
At an awards luncheon on 20 November 2025, the top prize of $30,000 was awarded to Irene Ng for her book S. Rajaratnam, The Authorised Biography, Volume Two: The Lion’s Roar. Two merit prizes of $5,000 each were awarded to Fairoz Ahmad for Neverness and to Simon Tay for Enigmas: Tay Seow Huah, My Father, Singapore's Pioneer Spy Chief.
The inaugural Book Prize in 2023 was won by Woon Tai Ho for The Soul of Ink: Lim Tze Peng at 100, while Khir Johari was awarded the Merit Prize for The Food of Singapore Malays: Gastronomic Travels Through the Archipelago.
